Daß Indiens wirtschaftliche Entwicklung immer noch so stagniert, hat viel damit zu tun, daß sich nach der Unabhängigkeit 1947 ein sozialistischer Grundkonsens in der Politik herausgebildet hat. Wenn sich jetzt die Anzeichen für Besserung mehren, dann ist dies auch das Verdienst entschiedener Liberaler, die früh gegen den Strom geschwommen sind und mehr Marktwirtschaft gefordert haben. Die von Parth Shah herausgegebene Aufsatzsammlung "Profiles in Courage" erzählt die Geschichte etlicher dieser reformerischen Intellektuellen, Wirtschaftsführer und Politiker. Dazu gehört Minoo Masani, Gründer der Swatantra-Partei, der bis heute die geistige Führungsfigur aller Marktliberalen in Indien bleibt. Dazu gehört auch Bellikoth Ragunath Shenoy, der die liberalen Lehren Friedrich August von Hayeks in Indien einführte, oder auch Ardeshir Darabshaw Shroff, der einen der führenden Verbände für das freie Unternehmertum gründete. Wer diesen Band liest, kann wieder Hoffnung für Indien schöpfen.

The still lasting stagnation of the economic development of India is strongly related to the socialist consensus that has been formed in politics after the independence in 1947. The now increasing number of signs of a change for the better is due to the work of determined liberals who early swam against the tide and demanded more market economy. "Profiles in Courage", a collection of essays published by Parth Shah tells the history of many of those reformist intellectuals, leading industrialists and politicians. One of them is Minoo Masani, founder of the Swatantra-party, who still is the mental leader of all liberals in India. Others are Bellikoth Ragunath Shenoy who introduced the liberal theories of Friedrich von Hayek in India, or Ardeshir Darabshaw Shroff who has founded one of the main associations for free entrepreneurship. Reading this volume can raise ones hopes for India again.
